Five Steps To Create an Easy Featured Posts Carousel

Your client wants to feature some posts on top of their page. They want the featured posts to appear different from time to time for maximum exposure. So you’ll want to create your own featured carousel. Here’s how you could create one in just five steps.

  1. The Default Image


Use a good image editor and create some triangles with dimensions from 233-250×130-150px rectangles. If you want to style it, you could create some rounded corners or other border designs. Make it as attractive and as eye catching as you can. You want to catch the eye of your visitors, so make it count!


Make sure to assign that this is your “no-featured-image.jpg” in your theme’s images folder

Now it’s time to start with the PHP. Open the header.php portion of your theme. You must see the following code:

  1. A Breakdown Of The Codes

This item will get the information using the get posts(); function. It then assigns the post date to the $featured_posts variable. Using the get posts();, you except a single parameter that is a query string similar to what you could see at the end of the URL.


“Numberposts” has a setting of three, indicating that three frames would be displayed. “Category” would then use the category you assigned for your featured posts.

This line helps you see if you used a specific image. If there’s no specific image, you could assign the $image to a URL or a default image.

Assigning the function to a featured category and using the custom value “featured image”, you could uploade 233-250×130-150 images for your featured post carousel.




These featured posts help circulate the traffic of content for most websites. It also helps with the SEO technicalities that contribute to website traffic. Most businesses will demand this from you, so it is best that you deliver this function whenever needed.
