If you found another blog or website that stole an image (or several of them) from you and they’re using the images (which are being hosted on YOUR server) on their blog or site right now, here’s how to perform a Digital Whack Job on them.

First, a little background… This idea was inspired by a recent post I wrote called, “Attention Fellow Bloggers: People May Be Stealing From You!“, and the comment posted by Erum.  Basically, someone just copied an image from my site and posted it on their blog.  The image is still linked to my site, so I’m basically hosting the image for them and it’s eating some of my bandwidth.

Yesterday Erum made a comment on the above post and said:

“Pssst don’t just change the image name. Replace it with one that says ‘This image is stolen’.”

What a great idea Erum!  I jumped on it this morning.  Below are the images that I created, which now show up in place of the images that were stolen:

Image 2:

Here’s what I did:  I simply changed the file names of the images that were stolen and upload the two images you see above to replace them.  Then of course I changed the file names of the old images and posted those new images on my blog.

Now the above images are seen on the person’s blog that is now kindly advertising my WhackedOut Marketing website for me - free of charge.  :)

Thanks for the idea Erum!

That I do - especially WhackedOut advertising. :)

  3. Rob - that’s just too creative - only a mind like yours could come up with THAT!

Question though - how do you know someone’s stolen an image from your site?

    Hey Sue!

The way I found out about it was that I noticed that a blog post I wrote awhile back was getting a TON of views, and I wanted to see where the traffic was coming from.

(See the # 1 spot for Most Viewed on the right side of this page below most commented posts)

I logged into my server and noticed a blog that was sending over a ton of traffic… or so I thought. I went to his blog to see where he mentioned this blog or my post.

I found nothing… I knew something strange was going on.

So I started to look through his posts and saw an image that I knew was taken from my site.

I put my mouse over the image, looked down at the far bottom right of the screen and saw that the image was still being hosted on my server. All he did was copy the location of the image and posted it on his blog.

So that’s how I found out.

Now if he copied the image and then uploaded it to his server, I would have never known. But hopefully he would know better than to do that… well, then again, this “Internet Marketing Consultant” should know better than to be doing what he is doing on EVERY blog posts he writes where EVERY image he has on his blog is being hosted by other blogs. Not good!
