WhackedOut Marketing Idea: Get Back At That Jerk!

You just never know when these WhackedOut Marketing ideas are going to appear.  Oddly enough most of my ideas come while I’m in the shower and I often find myself in some interesting situations.  (Remind me to share one of the stories with you sometime…)

Even while I wrote the above, an idea for a waterproof notebook that you could hang in the shower appeared to me.  Think about it… Just imagine being able to capture all of your ideas that come to you while in the shower!  I may be onto something here…

I quickly did a search online to see if any such thing exists.  Darn… thought I had some new WhackedOut idea here. They already make waterproof notebooks.  See here and here.  I may have to get a few of these…

Anyway, I had another WhackedOut Marketing idea come to me and I thought I’d share it with you.  Normally all sorts of wild and WhackedOut ideas pop into my head and for years they’ve had a home in countless notebooks (none of which are waterproof) until an opportunity to use one or more appeared.  However, lately for some reason I decided to share a few… so here goes nothing.

Janie of HouseOfJerkey.Net commented on one of my recent blog posts, where I shared a WhackedOut idea on how a tree service company could get some (maybe even a lot) of publicity.  Interestingly enough, Jason the tree service guy had also commented on one of my previous blog posts as well.  Interesting…

When I logged in to approve Janie’s comment, I checked out her website to see what she was up to.

Mmmmmm… beef jerky.

National Beef Jerky Hunting Day

National Beef Jerky Hunting Day: June 1st!

It got me thinking… what could a beef jerky business do that is totally WhackedOut that would make them stand out from all of the other beef jerky companies?

My last WhackedOut idea posted was a heck of a lot more ‘fluffy’ than this.  It involved helping people, the community, changing people’s lives, Christmas, children, fluffy white cuddly bunnies, etc.

Well, now I’m going to show you… the other side of WhackedOut Marketing.

Domain name: JerkAJerk.com

I had to go ahead and register the domain name before someone read this blog and scooped it up.  Janie, contact me for the domain if interested in doing anything with this WhackedOut idea.  I’ll transfer it to you in exchange for a little beef jerky. ;)

The idea: You help people jerk a jerk.  huh?

Some background: Thanks to my 30+ jobs I’ve had over the years (now thankfully self-employed since 2003), I ran into many people and bosses that were complete jerks.  There were so many times that I had wished I could just run into their office and call them a jerk to their face.

And I’m sure that there are millions of people who feel the same exact way.

And with JerkAJerk.com, everyone can get back at those jerks!

All someone has to do is enter in the Jerk’s name and address on JerkAJerk.com and a few days later a small box arrives with a small piece of jerky in a wrapper that says, “Someone thinks you’re a Jerk!”

Pulling numbers out of thin air here…

Let’s say you charge $6.95 for someone to send some jerk to a jerk.  Your cost for the small piece of jerk in a custom wrapper is $2.00.  Shipping costs $2.00.  So your profit is a measly $2.95 per sale.  Nothing to write home about…

But what if you had 10, 20, 50 or more of these come in everyday?  And what if many of those jerks liked the way your jerky tasted and decided to go to your website and place a larger order?  Ahhhh….

The obvious keys to make this work would be the press and building a buzz.  A few press releases may get some attention.  And maybe having some high-flying bloggers to write about JerkAJerk would be a nice-to-have as well.  More on this in a moment.

Moo. Buy my poo.

I say, Moo. Buy my poo.

Now some of you may have figured out that this idea is somewhat inspired by PoopSenders (warning, not for the faint of heart!).

PoopSenders is more of a one-time deal whereas with this, you have the potential to gain a loyal customer for life.  If PoopSenders gets a loyal customer for life, I’d really wonder what that person is up to…

Anyway, let’s say you get some press and you get some publicity in the blogosphere, on some websites, forums, etc.  That’ll get some attention and hopefully a large amount of orders initially, but what could you do to keep JerkAJerk rolling as a well-oiled lead generation machine for you?

One idea could be to set up an Affiliate program.  Another idea could be to contact many of the gag gift websites and offer them $X per sale.  You could pay them just for the sale on JerkAJerk and maybe pay a small commission from the revenue generated from the jerk, if he or she buys some beef jerky from you.

You could possibly create some videos, do some social media marketing, etc.

Ha ha ha… another idea… you could create a jerk.  Hire some guy to be a jerk in videos, on blog posts, on social networking sites like Twitter (some funny ideas come to mind here), and everywhere else you can think of.

People eat at the Road Kill Cafe where all of the waiters and waitresses are jerks to everyone on purpose, right?  Think about it.  The JerkAJerk Jerk could build quite a following… possibly a whole different WhackedOut Marketing idea angle with this one…

You could also advertise on MSN, Yahoo, Google AdWords, etc. for just a few pennies a click - with no competition!

If you look at the average search volume for these following keywords…

boss a jerk
boss is a jerk
boss is jerk
boyfriend a jerk
boyfriend is a jerk
jerk boss
jerk boyfriend
jerk my boyfriend
my boss is a jerk
my boyfriend a jerk
my boyfriend is a jerk

… it equals up to over 3,000 searches a month on Google alone.  None of the terms above with “boss” have ads running on Google at this very moment.

Even more interesting, I found…

“bad bosses” gets an average 2,900 searches a month on Google alone (just 3 ads showing).

“boss from hell” averages 1,000 searches a month, but shows that there were 1,600 in November.  So maybe bosses are bigger jerks towards the end of the year?

Supporting that theory, the term “difficult boss” averages 1,900 searches a month, but searched for 2,400 times in November.

Based on a quick little search using the Google Search Term Tool, I guesstimate that you could reach about 7,000 to 8,000 people on Google by doing a little more digging and finding some longer long-tail type keywords and phrases.

Add in Yahoo and MSN and boom.  You’re reaching over 10,000 people now paying just pennies a click in many cases.

You could also start a blog on JerkAJerk targeting all of these words and phrases.  I believe it would be fairly easy to achieve 1st page rankings on all of the search engines for many of these short and longer-tail keywords you find researching.

So there you have it.  JerkAJerk.

And as far as a tag line… how’s, “Give A Jerk A Jerk.” LOL

Alright.  Enough.  Too WhackedOut for you guys?  Or do you want to see more of these from time to time?  Let me know your thoughts… ideas… address… credit card… social security number… mothers maiden name…
